Heel pain is very common, and it is actually one of the main reasons why patients see a podiatrist – also known as a foot and ankle doctor. There are certain methods that can help to treat or prevent heel pain from developing in the first place, so let’s go over five key tips on how to alleviate it or eliminate it altogether:

Tip #1: Get New Supportive Shoes

If your heel is hurting for no apparent reason, you’re likely wearing shoes that are contributing to the cause of the pain. Shoes with no or little support and cushioning, such as flats or high heels, are one of the most common causes of heel pain and toe problems.

Worn-out shoes and orthotics should definitely be replaced if you have heel pain. If you are particularly susceptible to developing bunions or plantar fasciitis due to naturally flat feet or very high arches, then be sure to get orthotic inserts for your shoes, or get specially made orthotic shoes.

Tip #2: Reduce Pressure on Your Heel

Excess weight can cause heel pain, since there is greater stress placed on the foot structures which must support your body’s weight whenever you stand or walk. Being overweight can also cause pain in the ankles, which are weight-bearing joints that support your entire foot.

Tip #3: Apply Ice to the Area

Applying a towel-wrapped ice pack to the heel and foot area can help to reduce inflammation and swelling, which can contribute to heel pain. You can also immerse your feet in cold water for a refreshing therapeutic treatment. The cold temperature has a numbing effect that helps to reduce the sensation of pain while also reducing any swelling.

Tip #4: Give Your Feet a Rest

Heel pain may simply be due to your feet being tired and in need of a break. If you stand or walk all day, you are highly vulnerable to developing heel pain. Sit down, take it easy, read a book, and keep your feet and legs slightly elevated to foster proper circulation.

Tip #5: Get Custom-Made Orthotics

If you want to get rid of heel pain once and for all, custom-made orthotics are the surefire solution. Custom orthotics are available at your podiatrist’s office, and they are created for your feet only – shaped to accommodate your foot’s unique structure. A good custom-made orthotic can relieve heel pain and prevent it from recurring.
